Filing your first probate application will definitely be time-consuming and stressful.  The law and the forms are complex and it will always take a considerable amount of time and effort to figure out what to file, when, where and how.

The stress level is even higher if other family members are ‘watching and wondering’ and likely complaining about delays.  Delays in probate are a significant cause of estate disputes, often leading to the involvement of lawyers and accusations of misconduct against the estate trustee.

A slow probate application filed by an inexperienced trustee (or inexperienced lawyer) leaves the estate trustee very exposed to complaints from family.  On the other hand, if you take action, hire an expert, and move forward promptly issues do not have time to fester.

Most DIY probate applications are rejected at least once by the Court.  A rejected application must be fixed and re-submitted.  A rejection obviously increases the stress for the applicant but it also delays processing by at least a month and likely much more (we have often seen delays extending well over 6-12 months for DIY applications).  Sometimes, inexperienced applicants never succeed with complex applications even after multiple rejections.

Even a one-month delay usually costs the estate more than the costs of hiring our experts to get it done right the first time.  For example, if the main asset of the estate is a house worth $500,000 at 5% interest, each month of delay costs the estate $2,083 in interest alone.
